What to Do If You Lose Heat This Winter
The coldest months of the year have arrived in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, and with freezing temperatures in full swing, losing heat can spell disaster. Along with the discomfort and stress that a no-heat emergency can cause, you also run the risk of allowing your plumbing to freeze, causing costly damage. If your furnace or boiler heating system stops working, you can always call the heating experts at Aquidneck Services. But first, try out the tips in this blog to save yourself a heating service visit.
What Do You Do If Your Home Loses Heat?
If you do experience heat loss this winter, don’t panic. See if you can correct the issue quickly and safely with this checklist:
- Ensure that your thermostat settings are correct, and the batteries are fresh. Double-check that your thermostat has batteries and has the function set to “auto” or “heat.” The thermostat will also need to be set above the current temperature of the home.
- Check that no breakers are tripped and all emergency switches are on. Sometimes, electrical issues happen, and breakers are tripped for safety. Ensure that your furnace or boiler’s breaker is on. Red emergency switches should also be on—these can most often be found at the top of your basement stairs and on your heating unit itself.
- Verify that you have fuel by checking your tank gauge. Your oil or propane tank has a small round sight glass that houses the tank gauge. Check to ensure that you have at least ¼ of a tank full of oil or 30% for propane. If not, call your local fuel provider for a refill.
- Press your heating system’s red reset button ONE time only—more can be dangerous. You should see a reset button on the side of your home heating system, whether it’s a furnace or a boiler. Press it one time only to see if your furnace or boiler can be reset. If you press it once and it doesn’t work, be sure to give our heating experts a call so they can assist you.
If you’ve performed all the above steps and still don’t have heat, call Aquidneck Services at (401) 251-4226 right away for assistance.
